Overview

Prior to the V8i release, ProjectWise Orchestration Framework (OFW) did not use the standard logging mechanisms as the other ProjectWise products. This TechNote will review standard troubleshooting steps and tips regarding OFW as it relates to ProjectWise Document Processors (Full Text Indexing, Thumbnails and Property Extractor.)

Pre-Requisites/Assumptions

This TechNote assumes ProjectWise Integration Server is installed with the Automated File Processing (AFP) feature, and has at least one of the AFP engines enabled. The Orchestration Framework database information configured during installation will be needed; this includes the server name, database name, username and password to connect.

Orchestration Framework Administrator

  1. Install the Orchestration Framework Administrator (also known as ProjectWise Distribution Services Administrator or Automation Services Administrator) found in the ProjectWise Admin Setup files.
  2. Launch the Orchestration Framework Administrator (OFA), via the Start menu: Start >> All Programs >> Bentley >> ProjectWise V8 XM (or 2004) >> Orchestration Framework>> Orchestration Framework Administrator
  3. Choose Connections >> Connect >> Orchestration Framework Browser
  4. Provide the database information configured during OFW installation in the database setup window
  5. Expand the Instances tree and right click on the appropriate extraction tool name and select Monitor

Figure 1 shows a standard example of a thumbnail extraction monitor, with everything running properly.

Bentley Logger

Sometimes more detail is required than just the monitors in the OFA. This section will explain how to run OFW logging using the Bentley Logger.

*Please note: This utility is no longer available with the release of V8i, as the logging has changed. See the ProjectWise V8i help and administrator guide for more information on OFW V8i logging.

  1. With the OFA window active, hit Control-Alt-G on your keyboard
  2. Select Monitor >> New Monitor
  3. Name the monitor when prompted
  4. Choose Monitor >> Configure (see figure 2)
  • Select the Level Wildcard in each of the four sections (note there is a scroll bar within the window
  • Select This Monitor, Put as DISPLAY Config and Put as FILE Config
  • Hit OK

Figure 3 shows the Bentley Logger data. Entries are color coded to easily see if things are running as normal. Any red entries should be looked into more carefully while troubleshooting document processor problems

Common issues

When attempting to launch the Bentley Logger the following error appears. "The system cannot find the file specified" (see figure 4).

  • Bentley Logger requires Java in order to run. The Solution is to install Java Runtime Engine from ProjectWise Server setups.

 Logging to file options

 Viewing Bentley Logger monitor data

  1. Run the Bentley logger as explained previously (Control-Alt-G)
  2. Make sure the Put as FILE Config option is turned on in the monitor configuration (Figure 2)
  3. In windows Explorer go to ..\Bentley\OrchestrationFramework\BentleyLogger\ and double click startLogFileReader.bat
  4. In the LogFileReader, select File>>Open
  5. Look in: ..\Bentley\Orchestration Framework\BentleyLogger\ ClientWorkDir\GuiClientWorkDir\monitors\logFiles

Logging to file without running the Bentley Logger

  1. In the OFA, Select Instances >> Configure Logging
  2. Select Enable File Logging, choose the desired directory and select desired severity levels (it recommended to select all levels for troubleshooting purposes) (see figure 5)
  3. In windows Explorer go to ..\Bentley\OrchestrationFramework\BentleyLogger\ and double click startLogFileReader.bat
  4. In the LogFileReader, select File>>Open
  5. Look in: ..\Bentley\Orchestration Framework\BentleyLogger\ClientWorkDir\monitors\logFiles\CommandLineClient

Common error messages found in Bentley Logger Data

Login failed or access denied

  • Verify the user that is running the ProjectWise Integration Server service has rights to: ..\Bentley\ProjectWise\bin\DmsAfpEngineConf.xml
  • Verify the Integration server is running
  • Re-enter the username and password in the properties of the Document Processor using the ProjectWise Administrator

Failed to retrieve file from file server (see figure 3)

  • Verify the file exists in the ProjectWise storage area
