 Applies To

 Product(s):ProjectWise Integration Server
 Version(s):08.11.11.111
 Environment: N\A
 Area: ProjectWise Administrator
 Subarea: MISC

Error or Warning Message

When connecting a new version of Projectwise Administrator to an older version of the Projectwise integration server datasource, the user is prompted to create tables.

Create Custom Database Tables:  Do you want to Projectwise to create tables in the database?  To create tables, you must be logged in as a database administrator.  Make sure you log in defaults to the correct database tablespace.

Click cancel to the dialog to create tables and the user gets this error message.
Last Error [58198]
Cannot login to the datasource
Database tables verification failed.  One or more custom tables are missing.

Explanation

The 'create custom tables' and the 58198 error messages are a result of connecting a newer version of the Projectwise Administrator to an older version of a Projectwise Integration servers datasource.  The newer version of ProjectWise administrator checks and validates the tables it needs to function.  If the tables are not found it prompts you to create them.  If you have not upgrade your datasource to the same version of ProjectWise Administrator you are using, then click cancel.

In order to fix the problem you will need to clean up your ProjectWise install.

How to Avoid

Option 1: Use matching versions of ProjectWise Software on the client machine

  1. If you need to have ProjectWise Administrator on your client machine, make sure you have matching versions of all Projectwise software on the client machine and that they also match the version of the Projectwise integration server.
  2. On the client machine, uninstall all ProjectWise software, delete the Program files \ Bentley\ ProjectWise and or Program files (86)\ Bentley \ Projectwise directory, then reinstall ProjectWise Explore and Projectwise Administrator with the same version that is on the Projectwise Integration server.

Option 2: Install the latest version of Projectwise Explorer on the client and Remote into the ProjectWise Integration server to us Projectwise Adminstrator.

  1. On the client machine, uninstall all ProjectWise software, delete the Program files \ Bentley\ ProjectWise and or Program files (86)\ Bentley \ Projectwise directory, then reinstall the newer version of ProjectWise Explore.
  2. When you need to do adminstrative tasks, Remote into the ProjectWise Integration Server and use the ProjectWise Administrator client on the server.

Option 3: Use a Virtual Machine on the client

  1. Create a virtual machine on your client machine, and install the ProjectWise Administrator client that matches the version on the server.

Problem

Turning off single sign on.
A user accidentaly clicked the option for single sign on in the login box and now it single signs him on through all his programs. How can he turn that off?

Solution

The setting to fix this issue is located in the ProjectWise Network control

If you have ProjectWise Explorer open, go to Tools \ Network Configuration Settings

If ProjectWise Explorer is not open, then in windows go to Start \ Control panel \ ProjectWise Network control

Click on the Idesktop auto-login tab, then click the Global settings button and uncheck the allow Automatic login and allow Saving passwords.  Click Okay to close out of all dialogs.

If you are unable to change items in your control panel due to security, you will need to log into the computer as a system administrator, or have your IT department help you with this process.

Can we run fetchfiles on a client machine

Problem

Can we run fetchfiles on the client machine to pre-populate the working directory to help speed up access to files?  We have users in a remote office on a slow WAN link and we are trying to figure out ways to speed up the process for users to get the files.

Solution

Running fetchfiles on a client is possible, but will not do you any good.
The reason: When a user checks out or copies out a file, ProjectWise checks the database to see if the user already has a copy of the file in the working directory. If they do have a copy of the file then ProjectWise does a date and checksum test and updates the file if necessary.

When you run fetchfiles, ProjectWise does not keep a record of who or where the file was fetched to.  So Projectwise is not aware that the user has a copy in the working directory, and in turn it will never run the checksum\date test and just send the file.

I think the best method is to have the user copy out all the files in the project to the workdir and let the DFT do its thing.

To Speed up access to files you might consider putting in a Gateway \ temp caching server in their office and use fetchfiles to populate the cache

Evaluation Only option in Product Activation Wizard for Projectwise

Problem

Evaluation Only option in Product Activation Wizard and Projectwise.

I am working on a Test Environment for SS4. I have an Evaluation license, so on the Product Activation Wizard, one of the options is Evaluation Only. If I use the Evaluation License, how long do I have before it times out?

Solution

The evaluation term is for 30 days.

If the activation wizard already had a server and activation key specified, and you go back in and change it to eval mode, ProjectWise will still get a the regular license from the SELECTServer.

To get it back to an Evaluation licesne, you will need to remove the server name and activation code first, click apply, and okay, and close the license tool.  Relaunch the license tool reconnect to your server and input the activation key, then go back and choose the eval mode. Additionally you will need to stop and restart the Projectwise services. Check the event application log to see that the ProjectWise Integration service is running and has 29 days left.

NOTES:

  • Each command line executed will open a new ProjectWise Explorer session and process only each unique argument/switch once.  E.g. Currently you cannot execute two commands (-c) for one given session of ProjectWise Explorer.
  • If you do not provide your user name (-u) and password (-p), your Windows single sign on (SSO) credentials will be used.
  • When specifying a folder name (-fn) you must include a trailing backslash in the folder name. e.g.  RMH\PRT\
  • Checking in a document may require additional comments to be provided.  This feature can be disabled if needed by your ProjectWise administrator.  There are a number of settings located in the ProjectWise administrator user settings for Audit Trail entries for comments.
  • When specifying a full path (-fp) to a folder you should not provide a trailing backslash.
  • When specifying a full path and document name (-fp) the document name will be selected (hilighted). When specifying a full path, command ids (-c) do not execute. TR#348889 has been filed to address this.

Additional Refrerence

For a list of ProjectWise command IDs it is recommended to download the latest ProjectWise SDK and locate the aawddef.h header file and look for the most current list of IDMD_ commands.  A sample list is provided from ProjectWise SELECTseries SDK below for reference.

Problem Description

When creating a document using the Naming Standard  in ProjectWise user receives the following error    Last Error 58129: Can not create the document. Document Code serial number is invalid.

The Unique ID is supposed to read as 004 but when we get the error and go back to the Naming Standard page it reads as 4

Steps to Resolve

  1. Delete Naming Standard for the environment.
  2. Delete the Attribute unique_id
  3. Recreate the attribute unique_id as a varchar and characters set to 4.
  4. Go to editing and set the format to %0u without specifying character amounts.

Once re-created the Naming Standard on the Environment, the documents were created correctly.  Also see: see http://communities.bentley.com/other/old_site_member_blogs/bentley_employees/b/jo_wests_blog/archive/2009/03/31/accept-able-environment-attribute-format-string-options.aspx

Problem Description

When I open a master file from the Projectwise web or web view site, (using MicroStation Or Bentley View) the reference files do not show in the drawing and are in red in the reference manager.

Explanation

The reason for this is that there is no ProjectWise integration available when opening files from the websites, therefore MicroStation and Bentley view do not know where to find the reference files.

Steps to Resolve

Option1:

The best solution would be to use Projectwise Publisher with Projectwise Websites to view the files. If you have Publisher installed on the server, and it is connected to the Projectwise webserver with the Projectwise Publishing gateway, then when in the Projectwise web or webview site, all the user has to do is double click the file or right click and choose view. The VPR viewer will come up and display an image of the master file with the references. There are also tools in this viewer to zoom in, plot, measure, and redline \ markup the file (that is if you are not in view mode).

Option 2:

Put the master and reference files in the same directory in Projectwise, run scan ref so that the master is now pointing to the references in the same directory. When you open the master file via the websites the reference will be found because they are in the same folder as the master

Option 3:

Add the path to each of the reference files in the ProjectWise web working directory to the workspace MS_RFDIR variable.

By default the working directory for the web client is located under the user profile: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\ProjectWise\WebWorkDir\<servername_datasourcename>\dmsxxxxx.

You would need to add the path for each individual folder that contains a reference file as the MS_RFDIR variable is not recursive.

Problem Description

When I right click a file in Projectwise WebParts web client, the checkout option is not listed.  It is also not available under the documents pull down.

Steps to Resolve

  1. Make sure you are connecting to a site that has read write access.  If you are connecting to the Projectwise Web View site, then the checkout option will not be available.
  2. Check to make sure you are using a supported Browser. You can find this information in the Projectwise Readme file under requirments for the Webserver section.  If you don't have a copy of the readme then Click HERE.  Choose your version then click the readme link. (As of this posting Internet Explorer 11 is not supported)
  3. Make sure you are using the 32 bit version of the browser you are using and that the lastest updates are installed
  4. The Checkout option requires that the PWWebFileTransfer Active X control be installed.
    1. As of this posting, ActiveX is only available in IE 8, IE 9, and IE 10 desktop, therefore all other supported browsers will have limited Web Parts functionality
    2. Check that the popup blocker is not blocking the active X control from being installed

How can I determine how many files are in a single folder, or in a folder structure?

Background

User is trying to determine how many files are in a folder, and in the folder tree.  Basically looking for statistics about a folder and the folders and files it contains.

Steps to Accomplish

Option 1: Use the Statistics tab in the Folder Properties

  1. In ProjectWise explorer, right click on the folder and choose properties.
  2. Click on the Statistics tab.
  3. At the bottom of this tab is the number of documents and subfolders and the disk usage.
  4. If you have subfolders it does not list out how many files are in each subfolder, rather adds up how many files in the tree from where you started.
  5. You can of course go to each sub folder and see the statistics there.
  6. Note:  If you are using versions, but are not showing versions, the count still includes versions.. So if you only see two files in the folder, but the document count says 3, it could be that the third file could be a version that you can't see.  Also workflow and permissions might play a role in what you see versus what the document count is.  The Document count should always be the correct number of files in the folder or folder tree.

Option 2: View Statistics in the Preview Pane

  1. In ProjectWise explorer, under  the 'View" menu make sure the "Preview Pane" is checked on.
  2. Highlight a folder and click on the folder properties tab in the Preview Pane
  3. Look for the 'document count' in the Preview Pane under the folder properties tab.
  4. This does not add up all the subfolder files and only gives the number of files in the folder you have chosen.
Option 3: Manually
  1. Highlight all the files in the folder by hitting ctrl + a.
  2. At the bottom left hand corner of Projectwise, there iwll be the number of objects selected.
  3. Note: This method only provides a count of objects you have selected, so if you have hidden versions or are not able to see certain files due to permissions, the actual count of files in the folder will be off.  This method is a what you see is what you get.

Problem

Is it possible to change the URL for the BTS Portal for Transmittals

Product: ProjectWise Server V8i
Version: 08.11.11.111
Area: General, Problem ID#: 87708, PROBLEMSOLVING

Solution

When configuring your portal software, the configuration above will
default your portal address to your server name, however you may wish to
use a specific URL for your portal for external users to access.

IIS does not let you change the host name of an https binding via the edit
button in this dialog: There is a way to change this host name value through a command line
tool, appcmd.

Keep in mind this site name needs to be resolvable
through DNS and the SSL certificate would need to be configured with
this host name in order for it to work.

To add a host header to a Web site's binding, use the following syntax:
appcmd set site /site.name:string /bindings.[protocol='string'
,bindingInformation='string'].bindingInformation:string

The variable site.name string is name of the site to which you want to
add a host header. The variable [protocol='string',bindingInf
ormation='string'] is the existing binding to which you want to add a host header, and bindingInformation string is the new binding with host header.

For example, to configure a site named contoso with an existing HTTPS
binding for all IP addresses, on port 443, without a host header to have
a host header named marketing, type the following at the command prompt,
and then press ENTER:

appcmd set site /site.name:contoso /bindings.[protocol='https'
,bindingInformation='*:443:'].bindingInformation:*:443:marketing

Temp Caching Server Maintenance, Cleaning up the Cached Files

I have setup a temporary cache server in an external office for the users to have quicker access to files
In the dmsknrl.cfg file I have set the limit 50,000,000 MB
The hard drive on this server is nearly full with these temporary files.
What steps can I take to clean up or delete some of these files.
Why are the files not being cleaned up?
In the dmsknrl.cfg file on the temp cache server I have the following lines
[cache]
enabled=true
storagepath=c:\cache
limit=50,000,000

Explanation:
The limit setting for cached files is in megabytes
50,000,000mb is equal to 50000 gigs.

The first thing to do would be to set your limit to something smaller
For example:
limit=500,000 (is equal to 500gigs)
limit=50,000 (is equal to 50gigs.)
limit=5000 (is equal to 5gigs)

Projectwise does have a process that deletes the oldest files from the temporary cache.  The dmskrnl.cfg file has the explanation of this process:
“Limit for cached files, is in megabytes. When the total size of all cached files exceeds this limit, the cache is purged (in ascending access time order) until the total size of all cached files is <= 80% of this limit. For extremely large caches, or caches with many small files, it may take several purge passes to get below the limit.  If this setting is not defined, or is set to 0, then purging is disabled, and the cache size is effectively unlimited.”

In order to get the disk space back you can delete these files manually to help the ProjectWise process get caught up.

Caution: Make sure you are deleting files from a temporary cache location and not a real storage area.
The temp caching functions sets up a folder structure under the directory you specify in the dmsknrl.cfg
Example:  C:\cache\files\192.168.253.130-5800\C_\PWSTORAGE_NAME\DATASOURCE_NAME
