Problem Description
When I submit a rendition for processing using iCS for PDF, the job appears to complete but no pdf is generated. If I click on the "Details" tab prior to the job completing in iCS Admin, the following error message appears:
Steps to Resolve
- Open PW Admin and navigate to the "Renditions" node
- Choose the "Renditions Profile Components/Output File Naming Conventions" entry
- Right-click Properties on the Output File Naming Convention being used for the iCS job
- Reduce the number of "Symbols" added to the "File Name Pattern"
Note: If this field contains muliple symbols, it could extend the pdf name longer than iCS is able to generate.

Utilizing Templates in ProjectWise Deliverables Management
Quite often PWDM users need to send packages to the same distribution list, or use a different default schedule and don't want to reenter the information each time. This process will show how to utilize drafts as a template to have the information pre populated.
note: this example is based on using the Portal, however the same process can be following when using the ProjectWise Deliverables Management Connector for ProjectWise Explorer
Create New Transmittal
Enter subject to clearly define the use of the template and any other information that might be used for most of the future transmittals (Purpose, Comments, Cover Letter)
Select the Recipients tab and Click “Add Recipients” Select the recipients that will be normally be receiving this type of package, and change the “Acknowledge” and “Response” settings per user as necessary
4. Click “Save Draft”
5. Any internal participant to the project will now be able to log in, and browse to the Drafts page, and use any of the created templates to initiate a New Transmittal
6. Clicking the “Use as a template” button will start a new transmittal with all the information saved in the draft (General, Recipients, Documents, Scheduling)
7. Change/add any details as needed and issue transmittal
Configure Bentley Transmittal Portal for ProjectWise to use a specific URL
Configure Bentley Transmittal Portal for ProjectWise to use a specific URL
note: This information is provided as informational only, please contact your IT department first regarding any questions regarding DNS, IIS or your SSL Certificate.
In setting up Bentley Transmittal Portal (see the BTS Implementation Guide for installation instructions) you must set up a website using SSL. This website will be configured during the deployment of the Portal software.
When configuring your portal software, the configuration above will default your portal address to your server name, however you may wish to use a specific URL for your portal for external users to access.
[Windows 2012 Server] Simply change the host name in the https binding to the address to be used for the BTS portal site, then skip to the final step below updating the BTS deployment Wizard.
[Windows 2008 Server] In 2008 Server, IIS does not let you change the host name of an https binding via the edit button. There is a way to change this host name value through a command line tool, appcmd. Keep in mind this site name needs to be resolvable through DNS and the SSL certificate would need to be configured with this host name in order for it to work.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753195(WS.10).aspx
To add a host header to a Web site's binding, use the following syntax:
appcmd set site /site.name:string /bindings.[protocol='string',bindingInformation='string'].bindingInformation:string
The variable site.namestring is name of the site to which you want to add a host header. The variable [protocol='string',bindingInformation='string'] is the existing binding to which you want to add a host header, and bindingInformationstring is the new binding with host header.
For example, to configure a site named contoso with an existing HTTPS binding for all IP addresses, on port 443, without a host header to have a host header named marketing, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
appcmd set site /site.name:contoso /bindings.[protocol='https',bindingInformation='*:443:'].bindingInformation:*:443:marketing
For more information about Appcmd.exe, see Appcmd.exe (IIS 7).
Be sure to open command prompt as administrator
After running the command, you will see that the website is now showing your new host name:
Now run the Portal Deployment Wizard again and you will notice the portal address is set with this new host name

Error 58033 Deleting Files
Product(s): | ProjectWise Explorer Client
Version(s): | 08.11.11.111
Area: | MISC | ||
Original Author: | Molly Watts, Bentley Technical Support Group |
Error or Warning Message
Error 58033. Cannot remove document file. Either the document file has already been removed or another application is using the file. The ProjectWise Caching Server may be stopped.
Explanation
The IP address of the caching server had changed, and the PW server was still trying to connect using the old IP address.
How to Avoid
1. Verify that the IP is valid in DNS, and in the PW Integration server's dmskrnl.cfg
2. Restart the ProjectWise integration server service to clear out the old IP from its own cache
Error 58060 Error creating a new folder. Cannot create/delete folders. (Solution 500000090006)

Problem
Error 58060 Error creating a new folder\file. Cannot create/delete folders.
When trying to create new folders or delete existing folders, user is being presented with the error message: "Last Error 58060 Error creating a new folder. Cannot access storage directory. Storage area directory has been removed or ProjectWise Caching Server is not on the specified server."
User had just moved to a new server and as a result, IP address had changed.
Product: ProjectWise Explorer
Version: 08.11.09.122
Area: Storage Area, Problem ID#: 74031
Solution
-There was an entry in the dmsafpengine.conf.xml file that referenced the old IP address. This was changed to the FQDN and the PWIS service was restarted and all was OK.
-Another thing to check here is the storage area entry in the PWadmin. I had a user with similar issue who moved the storage area and did not use the FQDN. Once the FQDN was in place for the computer name, the user was able to add files.
-Make sure the storage area exists as configured in the ProjectWise Administrator
Error 58063: Invalid Username and Password Combination
Product(s): | ProjectWise Explorer Client
Version(s): | 08.11.11.590
Area: | MISC | ||
Original Author: | Dana Guthrie, Bentley Technical Support Group |
Error or Warning Message
Error 58063: Invalid Username and Password Combination
Explanation
User has created user accounts in ProjectWise using the User Synchronization service that brings in Windows Active Directory accounts into ProjectWise.
When his users attempt to log in they get the above error.
This error may appear regardless of whether you are using a ProjectWise logical account or a Windows account. The error is true to its word, something is not correct about the credentials that were entered.
How to Avoid
Option 1: If using a Windows Domain account...
Make sure you put the domain name in front of your user name.
Example: Bentley\Username
Option 2: Caps lock and other misspelling
- Make sure your caps lock key is not on when typing your password
- Make sure you have the correct spelling of the domain name, user name and password.
- Check with your ProjectWise Administrator to make sure your account:
- Is active
- That you have the correct spelling as to what is in ProjectWise
- Whether or not your account is Domain or Logical as logical accounts do not require you to enter a domain name.
Error 58838 Cannot Login to the datasource
Product(s): | ProjectWise Explorer Client
Version(s): | 08.11.11.111
Area: | MISC | ||
Original Author: | Molly Watts, Bentley Technical Support Group |
Error or Warning Message
Last Error [58838]
Cannot login to the datasource
Invalid user name and password combination.
Explanation
Assuming the username and password have been confirmed to be accurate, what is likely happening is that the user is logging into an external datasource, using their email address as a username that is configured as a logical account.
ProjectWise is going to recognize that the username is the same as the URN of a domain user, and attempt to validate the password against the domain, instead of the logical password in the ProjectWise database.
There is a defect filed internally against ProjectWise on this issue (27162), however this is not a good practice to use the @ symbol in ProjectWise logical accounts
How to Avoid
Option 1
Change the username to something other than the users email address
Option 2
- In ProjectWise Administrator, go to the settings of this user and enter a blank space at the end of username
How do I copy the view columns and a list of files to Excel Spreadsheet?
Product(s): | ProjectWise Explorer Client
Version(s): | 08.11.11.574
Area: | MISC | ||
Original Author: | Dana Guthrie, Bentley Technical Support Group |
How do I copy the view columns and a list of files to Excel Spreadsheet?
Background
User is attempting to make a report using a view. Once the view was created the user did a search for the files they wanted in the report. At this pointed they wanted to copy the list of files along with the view column data to a spreadsheet.
Steps to Accomplish
Option 1: How to copy a list of files to a spreadsheet
- With your view set, and the search completed, highlight a file or all files you wish to have in the report
Right mouse click on the files and choose ”Copy list to” , “Clipboard tab separated”
- Open an Excel file and paste the data into the spreadsheet.
The view columns will become the headers of the columns in Excel.
Option 2: How to copy a list of subfolders to a spreadsheet
Create a view that includes the folder properties you wish to capture, then change to that view.
Under your user settings \ Document List make sure you have the option to "Show Subfolders" turned on. I believe this is on by default. When you are in Projectwise and you click a parent folder and the subfolders appear on the right, then you have this setting turned on.
Highlight the Parent folder
Go to Document \ ”Copy list to” , “Clipboard tab separated”
Open an Excel Spreadsheet and paste the data into the spreadsheet.
The view columns will become the headers of the columns in Excel
Note this function will only copy the first level subfolders.
Option 3: Use Enumfolders.exe to report on Projectwise folders and files
Enumfolders.exe is a new command line utility included with the V8i release of ProjectWise, and is a part of the ProjectWise Administrator install. The application is used to provide a way to report on ProjectWise folders/files. The program is also able to re-curse through the folder structure which allows a complete report of the hierarchal folder structure. This can be very useful for users who want to export the folder/file information from ProjectWise, to a text file for review. It can also be used for viewing the name of files and folders that have been deleted. (Note: this tool does not provide attribute data, only folder and file names)
For more information on Enumfolders see. EnumFolders Technote
Last Error [319]. Cannot start application for the specified document
Product(s): | ProjectWise Explorer Client
Version(s): | 08.11.11.111
Area: | MISC | ||
Original Author: | Dana Guthrie, Bentley Technical Support Group |
Error or Warning Message
Last Error [319] Cannot start application for the specified document. Check your program associations. Failed to generate managed workspace configuration file. Dynamic library loading failed.
Explanation
User has MIcroSation SS2 and 2004 edition on the system
The global association seems to pick up the 2004 edition
User created a user association to open SS2
When opening file via ProjectWise with MIcroSation 2004 it works fine
When opening file via ProjectWise with MIcroSation SS2 user gets error
Last Error [319] Cannot start application for the specified document. Check your program associations. Failed to generate managed workspace configuration file. Dynamic library loading failed.
How to Avoid
Option 1:
Found that the ProjectWise global association was set for MS 2004
On the client had user remove the user association and then recreate it
Go to tools \ associations \ programs
Change the "select an association view' to User associations
Scroll down in the list to MicroStation, expand Microstation, Expand open, then if an association exists, right mouse click on it and choose unassociate. Click Okay
To create a user association, Right click a dgn file, choose open with, browse, if the correct program shows up in the programs page then choose and click okay, if it does not, click the browse button and navigate to the executable in this case ustation.exe then click open, then okay. If you will always use this program for dgn's, then check the box for always use this program, then click okay
Had user open local document organizer and purge the workspace files.
Go to tools local document organizer, click view then choose 'workspace copies'
Highlight all the workspace files that appear and then right click and choose purge
You may need to do this for copies as well.
Then had user open the file via ProjectWise using his user association with MS SS2 and the workspace reloaded and opened the file with no errors
Option 2:
Another problem might be that one of the files associated with the workspace, the master file or its references, may be corrupt.
To test, Export \ Send to folder the master file. The Master and References should be exported. In some cases you may get the error while doing the export that points to the offending file.
If the export succeeds try opening the file locally to see if it opens properly.
Option 3:
The ProjectWise Explorer logs (pwc.log) can help narrow down what files that are part of the workspace that are inaccessible. Contact support for help turning up and reading logs, if needed.

Last Error 56049 Cannot log in to the data source. Database communication Error.
Product(s): | ProjectWise Explorer Client
Version(s): | 08.11.11.111
Area: | MISC | ||
Original Author: | Arturas Zidonis, Bentley Technical Support Group |
Error or Warning Message
Last Error 56049 Cannot log in to the data source. Database communication Error.
Explanation
This error message can appear logging in to ProjectWise datasource.
If you check ProjectWise services you might see that they are up and running. Trying to restart ProjectWise Integration Server service and ProejctWise Orchestration Framework service it will not start. This means that the account under which the ProjectWise processes are running, may be locked out, or that the password for this account (which by requirements should have a fixed password) has been changed.
Another possible issue is that the communication between the datasbase server and the integration server has stopped.
How to Avoid
Unlock the account or change the password back under which ProjectWise services are running.
- or change the account password in Services for the ProjectWise Integration Server service and ProjectWise Orchestration Framework service.
On the integration server, check the ODBC connection to make sure the system is able to communicate to the database server. If that fails, then on the database server, check to make sure the database services are running.

Managed Workspace config file changes are not sticking
Product(s): | ProjectWise Explorer Client
Version(s): | 08.11.11.559
Area: | MISC | ||
Original Author: | Dana Guthrie, Bentley Technical Support Group |
Background
Changes to files in ProjectWise managed workspace are not updating the workspace on the local machine
User had changed a configuration file on his local system, then renamed the original in ProjectWise to .old and then dropped the newly edited one in.
When he opens a dgn file that is in a folder with the workspace assigned the changes he made in the workspace are not there. It seems to be reading the old file
Explanation
Projectwise knows that the file he renamed is part of a configuration block and when he changed the name in PWE, PW also changed the name in the configuration block to reference the .old file
Steps to Resolve
- Remove the new file
- Rename the .old file to the original name
- Go to the properties of that file and using the advance button import the new file.
Security for Working Directories

Security for Working Directories
Problem:
We have various boardroom computers that are shared between users and our consultants. Is there a way to lock the pw_working folder so that it cannot be access by anyone else but the user?
Solutions:
Since the users and consultants are using a common computer, the Workdir would have to be saved to secure location. And if the users are not logging into the computer with their own windows login, and just logging into ProjectWise, then that makes it even more difficult to find a secure location on the system.
- Move the working directory to a secure location.
- If the users are logging into they system and not sharing the windows log in, then you could move the working directory to a location in the windows profile.
- Move the users working directories to a server share that the consultants do not have access to.
- Uncheck the leave local copy options in the user settings. This way a copy of the files are not left on the machine.
The working directory is tracked by the ProjectWise user name and computer name in the database. So if a user opens \ copies out a file on the computer in the board room, it is logged in ProjectWise with that computer name and user name.
- Purge the working directory on log out.
- If it is necessary to leave a local copy then there is another user setting you could try which is under the Interface node called Show local Document organizer on log out. When this is on, and the user logs out, a dialog is presented to remind the user to purge their local working directories. Unfortunately the purging part is not automatic and is a step the users would have to be instructed to do. This only purges the copies on the machine they are on. Since this is a user setting they will be prompted with this dialog regardless of the machine they are on. So they would need to be instructed to only purge when in the board room.
- There may be an SDK routine that could be created that you could run that would automatically purge the working directories. If you do not have an in house programmer, then you could contact Bentley Professional services and ask to have a custom tool created. You can contact Professional services through your Bentley Account manager.
