ProjectWise web services FAQ

*Please refer to the iPad help for full details on these and many other topics.

What is ProjectWise web services?

ProjectWise web services is a web service that provides ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad users with a list of ProjectWise datasources they can connect to and access documents from.

Where can I download ProjectWise web services?

A standalone ProjectWise web services installation package can be downloaded from Bentley’s SELECT downloads website or the Bentley iWare site: http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Free+Software/.

Is ProjectWise web services easy to set up?

Yes! Setting up ProjectWise web services is easy. Please read the delivered documentation for step-by-step instructions.

Where can I find the ProjectWise web services documentation?

There is a PDF included with the ProjectWise web services download. The PDF includes information about setting up prerequisite software, installing and deploying ProjectWise web services, and configuring the datasource list for ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad users. Youcanalsofollowthelinkedhowto: http://communities.bentley.com/products/projectwise/content_management/w/wiki/projectwise-web-services-install-tn.aspx

Do I need a license for ProjectWise web services?

A license is not needed for ProjectWise web services; however a Passport is required for the ProjectWise Explorer Mobile application for the iPad user connecting to the ProjectWise web services.

What operating system do I need?

64-bit Windows Server 2008 SP2 or R2 SP1 (Windows Server 2003 is not supported)

Which version of ProjectWise does it work with?

ProjectWise web services has been tested using ProjectWise V8i (SELECTseries 3) and ProjectWise V8i (SELECTseries 4), therefore it is recommended that you use one of these versions. Earlier versions may work, but they have not been tested and are not supported.

Can I install ProjectWise web services on the same computer as ProjectWise Web Server?

Yes, you can install these two servers on the same computer. If you do, please consider the following items:

· Always deploy ProjectWise web services to its own IIS website, and never to a website being used by ProjectWise Web Server, or any other ProjectWise application.

· Always use a dedicated port for the ProjectWise web services website, and never the same port as the ProjectWise Web Server website (or any other website on the computer for that matter).

· The Web Server (IIS) role services required for ProjectWise Web Server do not interfere with ProjectWise web services, and should be left as is, if you already set them up for ProjectWise Web Server. Just make sure you install / turn on the additional role services required by ProjectWise web services, as mentioned in the ProjectWise web services documentation.

IIS is already configured for ProjectWise Web Server. Can I use the same IIS settings for ProjectWise web services?

The IIS role services required for ProjectWise Web Server are different than those required for ProjectWise web services. If you have already installed the Web Server (IIS) role and role services required for ProjectWise Web Server, you can leave those role services turned on; they do not interfere with ProjectWise web services. Just make sure you install / turn on the additional role services mentioned in the ProjectWise web services documentation.

Why is SSL required?

SSL ensures that ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad users are connecting to ProjectWise web services over a secure connection. ProjectWise web services will not work if the underlying IIS website does not have SSL enabled. Complete instructions for enabling SSL are included in the ProjectWise web services documentation.

Contact your IT department if you need help obtaining an official SSL certificate To create a self-signed certificate, see the following Microsoft topic:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753127(v=ws.10).aspx

Which ports does ProjectWise web services use for client and server communications?

ProjectWise web services uses two different ports – one for communication with the ProjectWise Integration Server, and one for communication with ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad users. To open each port, you need to add them both to the Windows Firewall exception list on the ProjectWise web services computer.

The port used for communication with ProjectWise Integration Server depends on which port is set as the listener port on the ProjectWise Integration Server computer. 5800 is ProjectWise Integration Server’s default listener port; contact your ProjectWise administrator to verify the correct port number to use.

The ProjectWise web services website’s SSL port is the port used for communication with ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad users. Port 443 is the default SSL port. If ProjectWise Web Server is already installed and using the SSL port 443, it is recommended that you use another port for ProjectWise web services.

Will ProjectWise web services work with ProjectWise caching?

Yes. Just make sure that the computer on which you install ProjectWise web services is able to ping the ProjectWise Integration or Caching Servers that are hosting ProjectWise storage areas.

How can I troubleshoot a connection problem?

Check the following:

· Make sure the SSL and listener ports are both open

· Check if https://server/pwmobileacccess works from a browser

· Check if https://server/pwmobileacccess/datasources works

· Check the Event Viewer log

· Check your IIS logs (c:\inetpub\logs)

· Check your ProjectWise web services log (C:\Users\Public\Bentley\Logs\pwmobileaccess.log)

You can also run the pwping.exe utility from a command prompt to show you all the hops the ProjectWise web services is making to communicate to the ProjectWise Integration Server. Check the Event Viewer to see if any warnings or errors are shown. IIS logging can also be helpful along with ProjectWise web services logging.

ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad FAQ

What is ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad?

ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad is Bentley’s iPad app that lets you connect to ProjectWise and access your documents from the iPad. You can use it to check out and check in documents, preview documents, email documents, and create new documents and folders.

iOS 5.0 or later

What version of ProjectWise can I use with ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad?

ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad has been tested using ProjectWise V8i (SELECTseries 3) and ProjectWise V8i (SELECTseries 4), therefore it is recommended that you use one of these versions. Earlier versions may work, but they have not been tested and are not supported.

Which types of documents can I view directly in the app?

· Office documents: XLS/XLSX, DOC/DOCX, PPT/PPTX

· Imagefiles: JPEG, TIFF, GIF, PNG

· Other files: TXT and PDFs

How do I view DGN and DWG files?

On the desktop, publish an optimized i-model from an original DGN or DWG stored in ProjectWise. Then in ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad, connect to your datasource and open the optimized i-model into Bentley Navigator for the iPad. Complete workflow is documented in the help.

How do I refresh the current folder in ProjectWise Explorer for the iPad?

Swipe your finger vertically down the document list and release your finger to refresh. You will see the text ‘Release to refresh’ at the top of the document list as you are swiping.

Does a refresh of the current folder also refresh documents I have already downloaded, if they are out of date?

Yes. If you have already downloaded a document from the current folder and there is a newer copy of the document on the server, then a new copy of the document will be downloaded when you refresh the current folder, thus replacing your existing local copy.

How do I delete a datasource connection, a file, or a folder?

Swipe your finger over the datasource, file, or folder you want to delete. A Delete button appears next to the item. Tap the Delete button, then tap Delete again when prompted to confirm that you want to delete the item.

Error or Warning Message

Last Error [56037] Error creating a new view.  View with the same name already exists.

Explanation

User is getting an error when creating a new personal view.
It seems to work but once they refresh, the view is not shown in the view pull down. User tries again to create the same view with the same name and gets the error. It appears the view is created but they aren't showing.

The 56037 error message you are getting is indicating there is already a view with the same name. I think the real problem here is that your views are disappearing. The disappearing view may be attributed to Project folders.

How to Avoid

Step 1 Add the view to the resources of the Project Folder

  1. If you are in a project folder and the view you just created is not part of the ‘resources’ for that project, then you will not see your view in the pull down.

  2. Right click on the parent project folder and choose properties, then resources, If you are have the correct permissions and user settings you can then add your view to the resources.

Step 2 Settings and permissions

  1. If there are permissions set on the project folder, the User must be a 'team participant' and have the "project Team member" role to change resources.  Right click the Project Folder, properties, Participants, and make sure the role for the group or user is set to "Project Team Member" or higher.

  2. A user has to have the proper user setting turned on in order to change project settings

In Projectwise Administrator, Right click the user name, go to properties, settings tab, all the way at the bottom is Project Permissions.  To be able to add views to a project resource, user needs the “allow user to change project types and project properties.

Error or Warning Message

Last Error 342 Cannot start application for the specified document.  Check your program associations.  Failed to generate managed workspace configuration file. File not found.

Explanation

The problem here is that the workspace was configured to copy down a file to the local workspace working directory and it is not found in Projectwise in the location it was told to look.

How to Avoid

Step 1 Turn up the Pw.log.xml for enhanced logging

  1. On the client, close out of ProjectWise Go to

    (If a 32bit machine) C:\Documents and
    Settings\<username>\Application Data\Bentley\Logs

    (If a 64bit machine)
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Bentley\Logs

and delete any files found in this folder

  2. then go to

    (If a 32bit machine) c:\program files\Bentley\ProjectWise\bin

    (If a 64bit machine) c:\program files (x86)\Bentley\ProjectWise\bin

    and open pwc.log.xml in notepad

choose 'edit' then 'replace' and search for =“warn” and
    replace with =“all”

Then do an edit find, look for the word:  hook

Change the <priority value="all"/> back to
    “warn”

    Save the file and exit

Step 2 Recreate the problem and review the log

  1. Launch ProjectWise and recreate the problem
  2. Open the pwc.log and starting from the bottom up look for the Word ERROR.

The pwc.log file will be found:

    (If a 32bit machine) C:\Documents and Settings\All
    Users\Application Data\Bentley\Logs

    (If a 64bit machine)
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Bentley\Logs

  3. You will see lines similar to this

    ERROR [0x00000d9c]
    pwise.ft.dft - failed in FTnet_startFileCommand with status -11037

ERROR [0x00000d9c] pwise.ft - Error -11037 "failed to receive file from server" at func: getfile_proc line: 308

ERROR [0x00000d9c] pwise.dms - ManagedWorkspace: folder and document fetch failed.

ERROR [0x00000d9c] pwise.dms - ManagedWorkspace: configuration file generation for the document [8386, 20] failed.

ERROR [0x00000d9c] pwise.dms - Error 342 "Cannot start application for the specified document. Check your program associations.

  4. Just up from these lines you will find a line similar to the one below which is the file projectwise is not able to download.

    INFO [0x00000d9c] pwise.ft - dmsFTGetFileFromServer(0x1, 'myserver.bentley.com','c:/pwstorage/dms00123/Myfile.dgn','//Myserver/PWStorage/dms00123/Myfile.dgn',0x0)

This error line will give you the file name and the dms folder number of where the file should live

  5. In ProjectWise Explorer find the folder and see if the file exists.

(use search builder, look for projects and folders, criterion type: general properties, property: folder ID, add the folder number to the Value: example if it is folder number dms00123, enter 123, click add criteria then apply\okay.)

If the file exists in this folder try to copy it out.

If it fails then it is likely that the file does not exist in the storage area on the server.

Go to the storage area to the dms folder to see if the file exists.  If it does not exist then restore the file from backup or from a location that you are confident was the last update of the file.

  6. Now test to see if the file and workspace open correctly.

  7. You may need to repeat the process as there may be other
    files that are not found.

When launched wizard sees the Sharepoint Website as IIS 7/7.5 web

This is a know issue that is very easy to miss. Usual indication
is if the web parts do not appear after deployment.

It usually means that the user used to launch the wizard
does not have the access to the SharePoint database, so it’s recommended to use
the same user account that was SharePoint deployed to be used for Web Server
deployment.

When crawling content sources times out with: "The filter daemon did not respond within the timeout limit"

This issue is fixable by increasing the timeout value in SharePoint:

When crawling content sources fails with: Error while crawling LOB contents. (Access denied by Business Data Connectivity. )

This could be related to SharePoint app pool user change aftert he isntalatio nwas already acomplished. This can be changed by manualy changing BDC object access rights to a required user.

I have two datasources. The first datasource is my original that I have configured with all the applications.  The second datasource is a new datasource and I want to copy\export the applications I created in the original datasource to my new datasource

Background

To perform this task you will need to be the administrator of both datasources, know the odbc connection user name and password, and be able to run a dos command

Steps to Accomplish

Step 1 Export the applications

  1. In ProjectWise Administrator, right click the applications node and choose, export application
    configurations.

  2. Savethe file as an *.xml

Step 2 Import the applications using the dmsconv tool

  1. On the integration server, Open a command prompt and navigate to C:\Program Files\Bentley\ProjectWise\Bin
  2. Type dmsconv –d ODBCdatasourceName –u databaseUsername
–p databasePassword –nomime –appfile (path and file name to xml you created)

  3. Example:  C:\Program Files\Bentley\ProjectWise\Bin>dmsconv -d
test -u sa -p password -nomime -appfile c:\apps.xml

  4. Note: This command will overwrite the applications that are currently configured in the
datasource.  This command can be used to add applications as well.

  5. Important:  This command does not set the Icons.  Icons will need to be set manually

Error or Warning Message

Last Error [-1] The view contains invalid column '{name}.

Explanation

User has exported a project from a test environment that included saved searches, and has imported it into a new datasource. When he clicks on his saved searches or the view he gets the error

How to Avoid

We compared the global views between the two datasources, and they were not the same.
Once we made them the same and assigned the correct environment to the view, the searches and views started working correctly

Error or Warning Message

Microsoft Excel cannot access the file ':: ODMA\.....filename.xlsx.  There are serval possible reasons:
The file name or path does not exist
The file is being used by another program
The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.

Explanation

User has a datasource that he has had through many migrations.  The datasource is currently on PW SS3.  He has other datasources on the same version that are not experiencing the problem.  He is connecting to the datasource with a PW SS4 client.

The problem is:  When he double clicks an excel document he gets the above error, but it only happens in this one datasource. The file will open after clicking okay to the error. All other datasources work fine.

How to Avoid

Option 1 Check user program associations on the client machine

  1. In Projectwise Explore, log in as the user, go to tools, associations, programs
  2. Change the pull down to User associations, then scroll down to Microsoft Excel
  3. Expand Microsoft Exel, open, and remove any associations

Option 2 Check program applications via the ProjectWise Administrator client

  1. Open Projectwise administrator and log in to the datsource
  2. Double click applications, then find Microsoft Excel
  3. Right click properites on Microsoft Excel, highlight 'open Microsoft Excel' click modify
  4. Uncheck the box that says 'replace default arguments'
  5. Click okay and okay
  6. If this does not solve the problem compare these application settings to a datasource that is working.

In the ProjectWise Administrator datasource properties, statistics tab, there is a date and time for when the data was last updated.  Other than the manual refresh button, how to configure how often the data is refreshed.

When are datasource statistics updated

On the ProjectWise Integration server, in the dmskrnl.cfg file, there is a setting called StatisticsFrequency.  By default, this is set to 12 hours (value in seconds.) It is not recommended to run the statistics too often because it can take time depending on the size of your database.  The value can be set to 0 to not have the stats run automattically.

StatisticsFrequency=43200

After the Integration server service is started, PW will wait the amount of time set for this value before first updating the statistics.  It will then run again 12 hours (or whatever the value is set to) after that.

Note that this timer is restarted back to zero any time the server or service is restarted, and will not update for another 12 hours.
