Error or Warning Message

Error 13 "Error creating a new folder.”
Error 13 "failed to make directory"

Explanation

User is trying to add a folder to a certain storage area and getting Error 13 "Error creating a new folder.” He is able to create a file in this storage area but not a folder. In all other storage areas and he is able to create folders and files.

The storage area is located on a NETAPP\ SAN.

We turned up and gathered the ProjectWise Explorer client logs and Integration server logs. Below are the data we found in each log.

How to Avoid

This is actually a windows error that pertains to permissions. It is basically saying, for some reason you do not have the ability to create a folder on this device.

In Windows Explorer, we looked at the storage area location and reviewed the properties on the root folder of this particular storage area. We checked the permissions to insure that the user account that runs the integration server service, had permissions to the folder. We also noticed that there were 99,998 folders is the storage area. Normally this would not be an issue, but NETAPP systems have a limitation of 100,000 folders.

There is an upgrade for the NETAPP system that fixes this limitation. Contact your NETAPP dealer for more information on this fix.

To prove that this was the issue, in ProjectWise Explorer, we deleted an empty folder, and then created a new one, that was successful, however we then tried to create another folder, it failed.  So this showed that we had hit a limitation.

To work around the issue (until the NETAPP system could be upgraded), the user created a new storage area and moved some legacy projects that were no longer being worked on, that used the same storage area, to the new storage area, thereby freeing up the number of folders in the storage area assigned to his project folder.  User also changed the storage area on his Project templates so that any new projects would use the new storage area.
