Current Revision posted to Content Management - Wiki by Marty.Nickel on 9/11/2014 12:55:16 PM

 Product(s):ProjectWise Automated File Processing
Version(s):08.11.11.123+ with a dedicated Tail Server
Operating System: ProjectWise Indexing Server Requirements per Readme
CPU: Minimum of 4, recommend 8
RAM: Minimum of 8gb, recommend 16gb
 Original Author:Marty Nickel

Overview:

This technote will describe how to add additional processors to increase Automated File Processing for ProjectWise.  Please take note of the minimum requirements above, this will not work properly and is not supported unless the minimum requirements are met.

Please make a backup of your Orchestration Framework database before following this technote.  This will allow you to scale back to the original configuration in case this does not work out for you.  If it does not work for you, just restore the original database over the newly configured database.

In order to get the processing to work as fast as possible, please follow this blog on how to properly configure the Full Text Indexing values in your ProjectWise Administrator:

http://communities.bentley.com/products/projectwise/content_management/b/weblog/archive/2012/08/08/optimizing-automated-file-processing.aspx

The AFP-multiple-processors.zip file can be found here.   There are instructions as well as notes inside of the file:

http://communities.bentley.com/products/projectwise/content_management/m/mediagallery/269773.aspx

Setup:

  1. Stop Orchestration Framework on your head and tail server
  2. Run this query on your Orchestration Framework database to check how many processors you have and to make sure the server name is right: select * from orchShepherdProcesses
  3. Edit the @MachineName value in one of the attached sql scripts to represent your Tail server
  4. Run whichever sql script you would like to use after editing the @MachineName value
  5. Start your Orchestration Framework Administrator
  6. Manually map the new processors by dragging the nodes from the left pane into the editor window in the Orchestration Framework Administrator to represent the picture below. This is an example of FTR.
  7. Start Orchestration Framework on your head and tail and processing should resume.

Notes:

After testing it appears that adding one extra set of processors to bring it up to two sets of processors is the best approach, three total sets have been attempted on some servers and some work but some it tended to max the server's resources out and make it unresponsive.  It is your choice if you would like to go above 2, but be warned.  Also when upgrading you will want to start with a fresh Orchestration Framework database since this does not convert over when doing the upgrade, after your upgrade please feel free to run the scripts again.  Please let TSG know if you have any questions on this technote.

Error or Warning Message

Error 55038:  Failed to create a storage.  File access security check failed.

Explanation

This error message can also appear when trying to create or access a file on a storage area.  The message would then say failed to create file..

In most cases the problem is a DNS problem on the network.  The DNS was configured with the Ip address and the FQDN and may not include an entry for the host name or vise versa.

How to Avoid

Option 1:  Check that port 5800 is open bi-dirctionaly and that you can ping the FQDN and Host name from the destination and source computers.

  1. User the \ Programs \ Bentley \ Projectwise \ Tools \ User tools \ Windows Socket Analyzer or...

  2. Use Telnet from each machine to see connectivity between servers

Telnet MyServer.Bentley.com  5800

Telnet MyServer 5800

  1. Ping the FQDN and host name from both computers to see if you get the same ipadress or even a response.

Option 2:  Check the dmskrnl.cfg file for incorrect or resrtictive entries.

  1. On the server ..Program files\Bentley\Projectwise\Bin open the dmsknrl.cfg file.
  2. Look for any entries that might include Allow or Deny and make sure the computer you are trying to reach is not listed under a Deny statement.
  3. Check for spelling of the computer name and that any entries with IP addresses are correct
  4. If you suspect that there is a DNS issue, add the host name and the FQDN to the [Routing] section.
  1. MyServer = 5800
  2. MyServer.Bentley.com = 5800

Option 3:  Make sure the Caching Server Service is running.

This error may appear regardless of whether you are using a Projectwise logical account or a Windows account.  The error is true to its word, something is not correct about the credentials that were entered.

How to Avoid

Option 1: If using a Windows Domain account...

  1. Make sure you put the domain name infront of your user name.

  2. Example:  Bentley\Username

Option 2: Caps lock and other mis spelling

  1. Make sure your caps lock key is not on when typing your password
  2. Make sure you have the correct spelling of the domain name, user name and password.
  3. Check with your Projectwise Administrator to make sure your account

Error or Warning Message

The Projectwise Caching Server v8i (SelectSeries 4) service on Local Computer started and then stopped.  Some services stop automaticaly if they are not in use by other services or programs.

Explanation

User installed the ProjecWise caching service on a server and when he tries to start the service he gets the error.  This error could occur with the Projectwise Integration service, Caching service or Gateway Service.

How to Avoid

This behavior usually indicates a port conflict. There was another application installed on the server that was using port 5800.  Once we uninstalled that application, the ProjectWise service started with no issues.

Typical the conflicting software is VNC (Virutal Network Computing)
To find the conflicting program, try using TCPview for windows or the command line netstat -a -b to find what programs are using which ports.

ProjectWise Point Cloud Streaming

Environment: N/A
Area: Open / Save / Copy / Move
Subarea:
Original Author:Jacquelene Smiro, Bentley Technical Support Group

Problem Description

Not sure if ProjectWise streaming Point Cloud and raster references functioning correctly.

Steps to Resolve

Please check the following:

At the Integration server level verify the dmskrnl.cfg file to ensure that it is enabled. (if load balancing check both configs)

Check PW Admin using the File Streaming node. This functions on a per datasource level.

This is a licensed feature.

The streaming of point cloud and/or raster references can be enabled (or disabled) by your administrator in ProjectWise Administrator. Point cloud streaming and raster reference streaming are licensed features that are enabled first at the server level (through settings in the dmskrnl.cfg file -if using load balancing make sure you edit both configs), and then on a per-datasource basis using the File Streaming datasource node

When point cloud and/or raster reference streaming is enabled and a point cloud or raster reference is copied out as the result of opening the master document to which it is attached, only the portions of the file necessary to complete the view in MicroStation are downloaded. Additional portions are downloaded as necessary as the user pans and zooms. If streaming is disabled, the entire file will be downloaded when it is copied out.

***Note, Also, the entire file will always be downloaded if it is checked out, regardless of whether streaming is enabled or disabled.

If you want raster references to be copied out upon attachment instead of checked out, set the attachment as read-only in the Raster Manager dialog. Point cloud files are always copied out upon attachment.

When opening master documents that have point cloud or raster documents attached, make sure you always select to copy out (and not check out) the point cloud or raster documents.

While point cloud streaming is new in this release, raster reference streaming is not — only the way in which it gets enabled has changed (in previous versions, raster reference streaming was enabled through configuration variables in the user's mcm.cfg file).

When streaming is enabled, this field controls the minimum size that a file must be in order for it to be streamed. **Point cloud and/or raster reference files at or above the minimum file size will be streamed when copied out, and files below the minimum file size will not be streamed when copied out (the entire file will be downloaded instead). This field is disabled when Option is set to Disable streaming.

To fix the issue where PW server components are not able to get a license, when the configured SELECT Server has a valid license.

Background

When first installing ProjectWise Integration Server, Caching Server or Web Server, you must run the installer with the "run as administrator" option in Windows 2008 to verify the licensing information is entered correctly.  Occationally, this step is not done, and PW is unable to get a license.  A sign of this issue, is when running the licensetool.exe under tools-options, at the bottom of the Window it states- Settings stored for: Current User Only, as opposed to: All Users of this Machine, which is what we need.

Steps to Accomplish

  1. Launch the Microsoft Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe) application as an administrator. This can be done by logging in to the computer with the Administrator account and launching regedit.exe, or by right-clicking regedit.exe and selecting the Run as Administrator option.
  2. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bentley registry node, then delete the Licensing registry key and all its subkeys.

  3. Close the Registry Editor.

  4. Launch the Product Activation Wizard using the Run as Administrator option, then reenter your SELECT Server activation information. The Product Activation Wizard ( ActivationWizard.exe ) is located by default in the following location, depending on your application:

    ProjectWise Integration Server

    C:\Program Files\Bentley\ProjectWise\bin

    ProjectWise Caching Server

    C:\Program Files\Bentley\ProjectWise\bin

ProjectWise Web Server and Web View Server

Problem

Reference files are not attached when checking out a file from ProjectWise, to open in Redline.

Solution

The integration was not configured correctly or being picked up - Proper process is Installing Redline, MicroStation first and then ProjectWise.
• Uninstall Redline and ProjectWise
• Install Redline then ProjectWise

More information on the symptoms are below:
The problem the user is having is that the reference files are attached already using MicroStation using relative path. The MS_RFDIR is not set. When they open the master dgn file with MicroStation, all the reference files appear, when they open the same file with Bentley view the reference files do not appear. In both cases the customer  opens  the file directly from ProjectWise. For some reason, either Bentley View or RedLine does not see the reference file paths the same way MicroStation does.
The user is not using MS_RFDIR or relatives paths and  the references are in scattered locations in ProjectWise. So when checking out a file it is putting it in multiple dms folders under the working directory.

Problem Description

When using the ProjectWise application (like AutoCAD, Revit or MicroStation) and trying to open the document (from inside of application) it logs in automatically to one of the datasources.
Opening ProjectWise Network Configuration does not show any settings of autologin defined.

Reason

Most likely in previous versions of ProjectWise the autologin settings were saved in the Crrent User registry (HKCU). After upgrading to ProjectWise SS4 Refresh Update the Network Configuration Settings requires the administrator rights to start and as a result the settings are saved/loaded from the Local Machine (HKLM).

This results that the Network Configuration does not show any settings defined, but the application loads these settings from HKCU and logs in to datasource automatically.

Steps to Resolve

  1. Open Registry editor
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bentley\ProjectWise iDesktop Integration\08.11\AutoLogin
  3. This key stores all autologin details
  4. Delete all the autologin settings from current user
  5. If needed use the ProjectWise Network configuration to define the required autologin settings.

Overview

The Attribute Bulk update utility tool provides the ability to update ProjectWise attributes with title block tag data from multiple design files. The data can then be viewed in the files environment attribute properties page and in ProjectWise views. This document will show how to setup and use the attribute bulk update tool.

Pre-requisites \ Assumptions

A working knowledge of ProjectWise Administrator, ProjectWise Explorer, ProjectWise Environments and views, AutoCAD, and title blocks is needed to follow along in this document.

The examples below assumes you have a title block already setup in your drawing file, and an attribute binding for that title block in ProjectWise Administrator. It is also assumed you have an environment and view configured. (For information on how to setup environments and views please see the ProjectWise Administrator help.)

**Please note the Attribute Bulk Update Utility tool is intended to use with .dgn and .dwg extension files. **

Setup \ Configuration

ProjectWise Attribute Bulk update tool is installed when ProjectWise Explorer is installed. It can be found under Start > All Program > Bentley > ProjectWise V8 XM > iDesktop_Integration > Attribute Bulk Update. For a picture of the Icon that is in the folder, see Figure 1 below.

Figure1.

In order to process .dwg files, the ProjectWise Attribute Bulk update tool requires the AutoCAD engine to be installed on the client. For the example below, AutoCAD 2008 was installed and an AutoCAD 2007 drawing was used.

Using the Attribute Bulk Update tool

1) Identify the title block name and make sure it is configured in the drawing file.
2) Via ProjectWise Explorer, open a .dwg drawing in AutoCAD and zoom into the title block. Select the contents of one of the tags in the title block and double click. The Enhanced Attribute Editor should display. See Figure 2 below.

Figure 2.

3) In the ‘Enhanced Attribute Editor' dialog, take note of the name of the Block and the tag name. In this example the name of the block is "TITLE" (case sensitive), and the tag name is DRN_BY
4) Add the attribute to the view in ProjectWise Administrator. It is important to note that the title block tag in the drawing file and the attribute exchange in ProjectWise Administrator need to be the exact same format (case sensitive)
5) On the Integration Server, log into the ProjectWise Administrator
6) Expand ‘Attribute Exchange Rules' and right click on ‘AutoCAD Title Blocks' select ‘New' then ‘Attribute Class'. See Figure 3 below.
7) In the ‘New attribute Class Properties' window, name the Exchange Rule. This needs to be the same name as the Block name that is mentioned above (see step 1, under the ‘Enhanced Attribute Editor'.) In this example it is called ‘TITLE'

Figure 3.

8) The following steps create the bindings between the AutoCAD title block and the ProjectWise environment attributes. Select the new ‘AutoCAD Title Block' you just created and in the right pane window of ‘ProjectWise Administrator', right click and select ‘New'. The New Attribute Wizard will guide you through creating a new attribute class:
         a. Attribute name: Name this the same as the tag noted in the ‘Enhanced Attribute Editor'. (In this example DRN_BY)
         b. Binding the attribute: Click on Add
         c. Add Binding: select the ‘Environment property' toggle button then select the environment from the drop down menu. See Figure 4              below.
         d. Select ‘DRAWN' and select ok
         e. Formatting bindings: Click NEXT
         f. Click Finish

Figure 4.

9) Repeat steps 1 thru 4 for other attributes to be bulk loaded
10) Add the environment attribute(s) that you bound to the exchange attributes to the view
         a. The view in this example is called ‘BulkIT'
         b. An existing view may be used or a new view may be created; in this example The attribute name ‘DRAWN' is selected and added              to the view. Click OK to complete the step. See Figure 5 below.

Figure 5.

11) Now that you have set up your Environment, View, and Bindings you are ready to run the ‘Attribute Bulk Update' tool.

12) Close and check in the .dwg mentioned in step one back in to ProjectWise:
        a. Make sure the folder has the correct environment ‘env_ap01' and view ‘BulkIT' set.
        b. Right click on the drawing and notice there is no information in the attributes tab for the file. See Figure 6 below.

Figure 6.

13) Navigate to Start, Programs, Bentley, ProjectWise V8 XM, iDesktop Integration, and select ‘Attribute Bulk Update'. See Figure 7 below.

Figure 7.

14) Login into the datasource where the drawing has been placed. See Figure 8 below.

Figure 8.

15) Navigate to the file and select ‘Mark' (A red check appears) and click Next. See Figure 9 below.

*NOTE: at this point multiple files and folders can be selected*

  • Highlight multiple folders and files by holding the shift key, then select ‘Mark'. This will place a red check next to all selected folders and files.

16) Review the Documents Summary then click next. See Figure 10 below.

Figure 10.

17) In the ‘Select Options' dialog, under Logging Level, choose ‘Full', then click next. Selecting ‘full' aids in verifying multiple files that have been bulk updated. The log file can be opened using notepad and will show error messages from files that have not been updated. See Figure 11 below.

18) Click Start Update. See Figure 12 below.

Figure 12.

19) When the Process is complete click Close. See Figure 13 below.

Figure 13.

20) Go back into ProjectWise Explorer.
The attributes will appear to have not updated for the file. See Figure 14 below.

Press F5 on your keyboard to refresh the list
The attributes are now updated. See Figure 15 below.

Troubleshooting Tips:

• Make sure all Binding are named the same as the Tag name in the drawings title block, (this is case sensitive)
• The ProjectWise environment attribute name does not need to be the same as the attribute Exchange attribute, however that attribute Exchange attribute and the title block tag name must be the same.
• The following registry keys should be in the path below with Multi-String Values Check the following registry key's to make sure they exist.
• HKLM\SOFTWARE\Bentley\ProjectWise iDesktop Integration\08.09\TitleBlocks\Tools\Auto Update\Ustation
• HKLM\SOFTWARE\Bentley\ProjectWise iDesktop Integration\08.09\TitleBlocks\Tools\Bulk Extract\Ustation
• There should be a Multi-String Value named ‘FileType' with Value data:
image/vnd.dgn
image/vnd.dgn;ver=8
